About Rootstock Mainnet
Rootstock Mainnet is a Layer 2 sidechain to the Bitcoin network, launched in January 2018. It enables the execution of Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, allowing developers to build decentralized applications (dApps) within the Bitcoin ecosystem. Rootstock achieves this by utilizing a modified version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), known as the Rootstock Virtual Machine (RVM), which supports Solidity smart contracts.
The network's native currency, Smart Bitcoin (RBTC), is pegged 1:1 to Bitcoin and is used to pay for transaction fees and smart contract execution. RBTC can be acquired by bridging BTC into the Rootstock network or through mining activities.
Rootstock's security is bolstered through merged mining with Bitcoin, leveraging over 60% of Bitcoin's hash power to secure its transactions. This integration ensures that Rootstock benefits from Bitcoin's robust security model while providing enhanced scalability and functionality.
The network has been operational without any outages since its mainnet launch, demonstrating its reliability and stability.
