About Filecoin - Mainnet
Filecoin is a decentralized storage network that enables users to rent out unused hard drive space for data storage and retrieval. It operates as an open protocol supported by a blockchain that records network participants' commitments, with transactions conducted using its native currency, FIL. The network utilizes both proof-of-replication and proof-of-space-time mechanisms to ensure data integrity and availability.
Launched in October 2020, Filecoin's mainnet is the live production network connecting all nodes, operating continuously without resets. It supports sector sizes of 32 GiB and 64 GiB, with a consensus miner minimum power requirement of 10 TiB.
The Filecoin mainnet has undergone several network upgrades, including Hyperdrive and Watermelon. The latest upgrade, Watermelon, was activated successfully on December 12, 2023, simplifying storage provider operations and introducing improvements to the protocol and the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM).
Filecoin's mainnet supports smart contracts through the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM), enabling the deployment of decentralized applications (dApps) and facilitating interoperability with the Ethereum ecosystem.
