About Base
Base is a Layer 2 scaling solution developed by Coinbase, launched in August 2023, designed to enhance the scalability and efficiency of the Ethereum blockchain. It utilizes Optimistic Rollups to process transactions off-chain, aggregating multiple transactions into a single batch that is periodically submitted to the Ethereum mainnet for final settlement. This approach significantly increases transaction throughput and reduces costs while maintaining the security and decentralization of Ethereum.
Base is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to deploy existing Ethereum-based smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) with minimal modifications. This compatibility ensures a seamless transition for developers and leverages Ethereum's extensive ecosystem of tools and libraries.
The network's native currency is Ether (ETH), and it operates with 18 decimal places. Base does not have its own native token, aiming to keep the ecosystem closely aligned with Ethereum and reduce the complexity associated with additional tokens.
Base's ecosystem supports a wide range of decentralized applications, including decentralized exchanges (DEXs), DeFi platforms, and NFT marketplaces. Notable projects integrated into the Base ecosystem include Uniswap and Aave, contributing to its rapid growth and adoption.
