About Ethereum Classic
Ethereum Classic is a Layer 1 blockchain network that emerged from a hard fork of the original Ethereum blockchain in July 2016. This fork occurred following a significant security breach involving The DAO, a decentralized autonomous organization built on Ethereum, which led to the theft of approximately $50 million worth of Ether. In response, the Ethereum community implemented a hard fork to reverse the effects of the hack, resulting in two separate blockchains: Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC). Ethereum Classic maintains the original, unaltered ledger, adhering to the principle of "code is law," which emphasizes the immutability of blockchain transactions.
The network utilizes a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, similar to the original Ethereum before its transition to Proof-of-Stake. In late 2020, Ethereum Classic adopted a modified version of the Ethash mining algorithm, known as ETChash, to enhance miner accessibility and mitigate risks associated with the Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) size growth. This adjustment aimed to accommodate GPU miners and improve network security.
Ethereum Classic's native cryptocurrency, Ether Classic (ETC), is used to pay for transaction fees and computational services on the network. The platform supports smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps), providing a foundation for developers to build and deploy applications within its ecosystem. Ethereum Classic has approximately 31,690 daily transactions across 101,819,308 addresses, reflecting a modest but active user base. The network is secured by approximately 5,000 nodes, contributing to its decentralized nature and resistance to censorship. The current block time is approximately 13.91 seconds, allowing for relatively fast transaction confirmations.
